Seasons Greetings from Winifred

Hello Fellow Artist!

happy-holidays

Your art and creativity, makes the world a more beautiful and joyful place to live. I wish you a wonderful season of peace and reflection and the greatest of health and happiness in the New Year.

Expand your creativity and your skills in 2017 by learning or increasing your ability to do freehand painting.  You’ve been thinking about doing so, but the idea of not having those photo pixels is a bit scary. You don’t have to give them up all at once.  You can start gradually by freehand painting only parts of the portrait – the hair or dress, for example.  You can practice altering a subjects appearance. With practice, you will gradually develop the confidence to paint a sketch or a trace of a photo or paint from imagination.  You will develop a painting style of your own.

Above – Tutorial “Portrait Basics and Beyond”

I enjoy allowing myself to be inspired by a variety of artist, and to create paintings in their style. but eventually, I simply return to my style of expression.  For instance, recently, I created several Alice Neel inspired portraits.  She uses a great deal of outlining in her paintings.  I practiced including this characteristic in several paintings. Personally however, I tend not to outline at all and ultimately I  returned to my personal style of painting.  You may also want to practice abstract portraits, images which are very expressive, free of features and detail, allowing for interpretation.  This is quite fun to do.

Developing freehand painting skills, in addition to skills you’ve already developed, will allow you to create even more creative images for your friends, family or clients.  Below are several freehand digital paintings I recently completed.

Please visit my store for Tutorials and Workshops which can assist you along your journey of creativity.  There are great sales on tutorials. Contact me if you want to purchase 3 or more for greater discounts. Workshops will be tailored  to your personal needs.

Watercolor Spring Particles – Painter 2016

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jkyR65k3LE

Spring RWC 2 C0lThese painting examples were created with Painter 2016 Watercolor Spring Particle brush dab type using Real Wet Buildup  Sub Category. Pause diffusion was enabled and never released. If you release it, you get a different look. The link for the brush is below.

Click Here for the Brush Used

With Color Expression expressed as “pressure”, it is very important to set rather high color jitter and smoothing levels. This is what gives you the color variation and texture. Without this the colors blend and might appear very dull.

The brush is not so easy to control, but you can gain some mastery with familiarization and with practice. Give yourself extra canvas space to crop just the best part of your painting. Experiment with the Watercolor controls, the Particles Common Controls and the Spring Particles Controls to vary the brush looks. If you get a brush look you like, save the variant immediately. If you don’t save it then you will likely never see that look again – ever!!

These brushes are very sensitive to brush calibration and every other brush control slider which affects them, with each nuance movement giving you something different.

Winifred - Matisse Inslired

One last Painting.  The title on the cover of the video below is misleading  – this video is not a discussion about the course.  After it was recorded, uploaded, downloaded and a few other  complicated maneuvers required to post it here, I noticed that I had not removed the text  which was appropriate elsewhere – it was too late – no more!!  This video is the recording of a painting which you have not seen – I don’t think –  it also shows a few of my Matisse inspired paintings

Creating a Painting from Photo Sketch 2

For those of you who were not in the course, it was offered at Digital Art Academy where I am an instructor.  Please check them out.  Set up an account and browse through the many course offerings available.  This course will be available again soon as “Open Enrollment”, allowing you to  download all course content and to work at your own pace.

Winifred Makes Portraits Paintings Sizzle

It is no secret that I love to paint and I am also considered a versatile painter.  I can create paintings in a variety of painting styles.  Some of  these images you will love, some you may not.  That is fine –  the idea is to create and personal paintings which you, your family or your clients will love in your personal style.

In several of my online galleries, you will see some beautiful but pretty traditional painting styles.  I have created this post to show you some ways I have ‘ramped’ it up a bit, including one painting from imagination and a couple of portrait paintings with patterns at the very bottom.  I can hardly believe how many “hats” I have painted.  I love to paint women in hats.  Even my painting from imagination included a hat. Alas, you might have guessed, I wear a sun hat everyday of the Summer if I am in the sun.

If you would like to increase your painting skills or if you are just starting as a beginner  one of my personalized training workshops, “Almost One to One” might be just what you are looking for. Please visit my Store to preview my Tutorials and take a look at my Personalized Training Workshops.

I hope you enjoy the images which follow.  Thank you.  Winifred Whitfield

Workspace, Arrange Pallets, Custom Pallets in Corel Painter X3

There is often a great deal of confusion about what the term WORKSPACE means in Painter. This confusion is supported by the common  usage of the term workspace, which is not the same thing.  There is  also confusion – or lack of understanding about the difference between the terms Workspace, Arrange Palettes, and Custom Palettes.  I hope this video will serve to add some clarity to these terms.  Please let me know if this video helps. this information is applicable to Painter 12.2 as well.

Winifred’s Paintings of Trees

I find it very interesting to see my paintings of trees since 2006. This is not something I have ever focused on exclusively though there are a few stand alone tree digital Paintings. Some of the trees simply exist within the context of a painting but they are so varied, I thought I would put this group together to share with you. The variety of styles in which I paint  is amazing – even to me.

My very first digital painting is a girl in a swing in a tree created in 2006 after my first Painter digital painting workshop. I am certainly not bragging about it’s sophistication but I still enjoy it.  I managed to use vibrant complimentary colors and to inject energy movement, texture and fun.

June or July Almost 1 to 1 Personalized Online Training Workshop

I awoke one morning and thought to myself, “why do I enjoy this training so much”. The answer came to me immediately, “because it is like tending flowers – creating a nurturing environment in which they can grow”.  I do love my flowers.

Since November 2012, I have offered personalized online digital painting training to aspiring to intermediate digital painters.  With a few students, we have started at the very beginning, having to install Painter and it’s updates before we could begin.  With others it has been going deeper into Painters amazing capacity to create beautiful and expressive paintings.  Often astist want to work with looser brushstrokes and have a difficult time letting go the detail.  I understand this.

This training is limited to one to two persons at any one time. This training has been very successful. Can you imagine such personalized attention being lavished just on you – directed toward your training needs. At this time I have 3 individual workshops in progress. That is what I do and I love it.

My paintings styles are quite versatile, hence, I can assist you toward the style you desire.

I enjoy incorporating patterns into my paintings. I tend to include patterns structurally into my painting even if not selecting patterns from my Pattern Library.

However, recently I created several paintings which included custom patterns from my library. Many viewers were enjoyed these unusual paintings and I received several inquiries from several wanting  to learn more about this process. Hence,  I have scheduled a Painting with Patterns Online 6 Hour Mini Live Session Workshop. I enjoy creating such paintings very much and I am sure it will be fun for you as well. I enjoy both the process creating patterns and the process of identifying creative ways to include and insert them into paintings. In the workshop, we will do both.

Although portraits are featured on this page. Patterns are equally suitable to include creatively in building exteriors and interiors, outdoor scenes, in clothing, and in any creative way you can imagine.

Drawing with My Eyes Closed

Recently I decided to practice creating some quick sketches.  I was taking  5 to 10 minutes on each full bodied sketch.  It was going well – I did 10 of them.   Then the thought popped into my mind  to attempt a sketch with my eyes closed. I  envisioned an action – a figure pose. I closed my eyes and visualized it. Then without lifting my stylus from the tablet I quickly sketched the pose. It worked and I laughed out loud at the result.  I tried another and another. I loved  them. The fact is, I love to create images which make me laugh and these certainly did the trick.

I thought you would enjoy seeing these quick sketches.

Winifred is Also Painting in Photoshop

After years  of painting in Corel Painter, a friend suggested I learn to paint in Photoshop – particularly since I enjoy teaching digital painting. I have created about 20 paintings in Photoshop.  You may see them on my site by clicking here.

People ask me if I have abandoned Painter?  Of course not. How wonderful it is to be able to paint using additional sophisticated software contained in both programs.
