Merry Christmas

Winifred with Gobi the Bactrian Camel 2008

Wishing you, your family and friends a warm, healthy and happy holiday season. I had to reach back pretty far to find a celebratory image and this one is certainly dear to my heart. This was my first camel named Gobi. My townhouse couldn’t accommodate him but he was such a joy for years. I added a second camel – “Butterscotch” and they supported my farm in becoming a destination point in my community and broader environs. Finally, it was time for me to begin a new phase of my life, one that focused on my photography and painting. I didn’t even have to look for a new home for them. A couple showed up at my farm one night wanting them. The couple had a large and wonderful farm in a town near to me. Ultimately that became their new home.

I tried all week to create a new painting. I was excited to do so. It was a landscape. After 4 days of painting, it was only an hour ago that I looked at it and recognized it was “un-showable”. It’s always good practice no matter the outcome. After all, I’ve practiced very little painting landscapes. Some day, I’ll try again. Recently, however, I came upon an image I created from imagination years ago when still painting digitally. I’ve always loved it. Below: It’s just a “feel good” digital painting I wanted to share to hopefully feel good.

Butterfly Tree – Digital Painting by Winifred Whitfield

I referred to it as the butterfly tree and of course it features some of my favorite elements – sunflowers. At the time I painting this, I wrote a little story about this tree. It was funny that people thought my story and this tree to be real and true. Digital painting was so much fun. I didn’t suffer so much as I do with oil painting. Oil painting is much more challenging, which is why I will likely never leave it. I will likely never feel that I’ve achieved mastery. Strange how that works. So even though this is not a holiday image, wrong season, wrong everything, I think, I hope it is a feel good image – especially since my landscape failed.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa. Winifred

Digital Pastel Painting from Observation

I’ve been enjoying painting digitally emulating traditional pastels. You’ve seem some of this work before. This time the subject matter is pretty wide. I painted baby birds, then fruits and veggies placed on a table next to my computer before transitioning to portraits using photo visual reference, even self portrait. Its been fun for sure. Below are some of the images I created.

From Photo to Painting

As you know, I  derive great pleasure in taking a photo which appeals to me and making it a painting.  To the extent you can visual the  final Painting – or at least come close, you are all the better for it. Your workflow and process will go more smoothly.  I was fascinated by this architecture. I decided that I wanted to give the image more space so I enlarged the canvas area and extended the sky and water.  From that, I could make a sketch and begin to paint adding and removing elements,  and adjusting colors as the painting evolved.

My Watercolor Experience in Corel Painter 12

My Corel Painter 12 watercolor class is over. I have been studying with quite a wonderful and watercolor obsessed instructor who teaches at the Digital Art Academy – Skip Allen.  He is passionate about watercolor and brush making.  I thought it important for me to at least become familiar with this digital media – to understand it’s opportunities, challenges, and to understand the brush controls. I  also wanted to work with some of the concepts of traditional watercolor as we attempt to translate this into a digital medium.   The following video  will discuss the 3 types of Painter watercolor brushes.   I will show a few paintings I created. I will  demonstrate how some of the brushes work – you will be so amazed to see them.

Creating Warmth and Mood with Color and Light

Color harmony, warm tones and light help to create mood and beauty.

This is a  painting I created  recently with what is probably my favorite color palette.

I love gold, brown and red tones.

There was no cloning involved in creating this image, not even a vase of flowers to look at.  I just opened Painter and started to paint.  I painted a background . I then painted the other elements of the bouquet on layers – all the while envisioning direction of light. Strong composition is always important.

During our workshops we will discuss the importance  of these elements in creating a pleasing painting.  Happy Holidays. Warmly, Winifred

Winifred Displays Portrait Paintings

This is a display of 30   large  beautifully framed portrait paintings. the display opened November 10th and will remain on exhibit until December 2nd.  It has been very well received with many visitors being curious about the process of creating digital art.  The fact is that they cannot discern any difference between my portrait paintings created electronically and those created with traditional media.

The following are some of the newest pieces to be included in my collection:

Sunflowers for Always

I have finally gotten around to painting my sunflowers.  Sunflowers are very high on my “favorites” list. Like many if my favorite images I just hold onto them until they tell me how they want to be portrayed.

This is the first one that I painted using new impasto brushes I downloaded from Skip Allen which he calls “Bristle Dabs”.  These electronic brushes are free and available to use without restriction.  It was the first time I painted with impasto styled brushes which give the great texture and loft to the brush stroke.  I love the texture throughout the image.

I followed this painting with a painting of a different sunflower – a little more “Charlie Brown” looking but  I enjoy it also.

A Treasure from Florence

Treasures come in many forms. I took a photo when Florence in 2007.  For the past years I kept it. When ever I looked through my files I paused to re experience the moment. I also knew this image was special – it had a story to be told, it was to be special. It was only recently that I knew what this image was to become. I painted it. This lady will never know it but now she will live forever as a very special piece of art.
